Google has competitors but no one in the US comes close to their search function, which is integrated with their advertising platform (i.e. their bread and butter).
Maybe they learned from Microsoft and are donating generously to various re-election campaigns.
I was thinking the other day how Yahoo used to be the premier search engine (as I remember it), and then Google just stomped all over them. Are they a monopoly or just smarter than everyone else? Hard to say.
Google has reached much of its position through merit, so who can really hate them for that? Nonetheless, with power comes corruption, and if they have a chance to game the system by using their influence on politicians, I have no doubt that they will do so.
