These stats don't exactly make me want to run down to my local fast food joint and bulk up. But then anyone who has ever worked in the kitchen of a restaurant and knows their secrets would never eat there.
The "super heavy users" stat for McDonalds was the most amazing to me. Don't people get tired of the food eating there that often? I have to admit I got taken in by the "Angus Burger" commercial. Tried it and it was awful.
The documentary "Supersize Me," which is available for free on Hulu now, really got me thinking about my eating habits. In addition to the sheer number of people that eat fast food regularly, the stat that shocked me is 50% of fountain drink dispensers are contaminated with fecal matter. Don't think I'll be drinking out of anything but a bottle in the future.
All in all a pretty disgusting yet informative article. It makes you wonder if this isn't so not just in fast food places, but also sit down restaurants as well. Food for thought-to eat out or not? I think not...
Ewwww...and we love fountain sodas...really, ewww.
We were eating fast food 5 days a week last year but have cut back to 1-2 days a week in 2010. It's like an addiction, although we never went to the same chain over and over again...
I know you didn't put this poster together and I rarely eat at McDonald's but I have a couple of problems with this hit-job poster:
Businesses make money by repeat customers. Why is anyone surprised when customers come back?
Are we supposed to eat like we live in sub-Saharan Africa?
Are those chemical enhancers banned by the FDA? If they're so bad, wouldn't McD's have ZERO return customers? (they'd all be dead)
Look at percentage of critical infractions per 100 stores rather than total numbers. McD's has more stores than anyone else o comparing raw numbers isn't a fair comparison.
Most toothbrushes in your home are contaminated with fecal bacteria too. That was a Mythbusters episode.
No question the way info is selected and presented influences opinion. Just watch the news any night and you'll see that in action. Was a set of data selected here that makes the fast food industry look bad? Sure seems that way. Do I want to eat like people in the Congo? No thanks, I'll stick with McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Taco Bell, etc.
I got your point you thought this chart must have been prepared by the PC food police. And any reasonably intelligent person knows the answer to your questions. I've never set foot in a Whole Foods store or a Starbucks, but have been to just about every fast food chain. Do you work for McDonalds?

ReplyDeleteWonder how much McDonald's donated to charity compared to say, Obama and Biden? How much compared to Whole Foods? How much compared to Starbucks?
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Congolese people would like a daily 1,000 calorie boost from a Quarter Pounder with Cheese?
