The 20 largest states have not faired well during the recession. Even states like Maryland and Virginia that are heavy in government jobs are struggling. But what's going on with Texas? Anyone have any idea why they are bucking the trend?
Texas has oil, a coastline, SYSCO, fair weather, HP, Texas Industries, Dow Chemical, bountiful farmland, the space industry, a strong financial industry, low taxes, the major port of Houston, Southwest airlines, AT&T, Clear Channel, dozens of oil refineries ... and a conservative tilt. That's why. :)
Texas ranks 21st in unemployment rate at 8.1%. Maryland ranks 14th at 7.5%. Maryland started the recession at an exceptionally low rate of unemployment.

ReplyDeleteStatistics depending on the way they are presented do not necessarily tell the whole story.
ReplyDeleteBit more business-friendly is Texas. As is Oklahoma.
